What is the difference between the quartet, trio, and duo?  Can I hear the difference?

A
string quartet is a group of four instruments, two violins, viola and cello.
A
string trio consists of three instruments: violin, viola, cello or two violins and a cello.
A
string duo is a combination of two instruments, most often as a violin and a cello.
